BRUTAL IRON
Name: Brutal Iron or Iron Brutalism
Type: Project in Course "Lauchhammer - A brand relaunch"
Collaboration: Molding Manufactory Lauchhammer
Date: Winter 2020 to Winter 2021
This project was a collaboration with the molding manufactory Lauchhammer. It's the oldest metal molding company in Northern Europe. Our task, which was also set up as a competition, was to design new products for Lauchhammers shop.
The concept of my design was Iron Brutalism.
Mainly science-fiction films or games show the same view on architecture and design. The cities are characterized by monumental brutal buildings, which are made out of metal. Further there are two types of futuristic styles: organic and geometric. With iron I associate symbolic effects like strength, power, force, resistance or technological advancement. Those characteristics are the target of brutal buildings.
My tape dispenser is inspired by shapes from those buildings. In 20th century the dispenser was made out of molded iron. In this design I go back to the original material. Also the form is inspired by a gearwheel or a millstone, which stand for the industrial revolution and advancement.
My design was made by the metal foundry "Lauchhammer" and was from 29.09. until 21.11. shown in the "Arts and Craft Museum" Berlin as part of the exhibition "Metal in Flow".
